Kaskelot was built as a Baltic trader, a type of vessel designed to carry cargo and withstand demanding sailing conditions, particularly in the cold waters of the North Atlantic.
A ship built to last
Her wooden construction, rigging and sturdy design reflect an approach to shipbuilding centred on years of service: sailing, working, weathering the elements and being repaired.
Almost eight decades later, that history is still visible on board.
It lives on in her timbers, her rigging and her spaces, as well as in the skills needed to keep her sailing today.
Many lives, one ship
Since 1948, the ship has changed names, owners, roles and destinations.
She had already lived several lives before becoming Le Français.
Over time, we will share that story: the milestones, the transformations, the voyages and the people who have kept her going.
Maritime heritage, still at sea
Today, Le Français continues to sail, welcome visitors aboard and pass on maritime knowledge and skills.
Living heritage is more than a story. It is an experience to share.
And it all begins in 1948.
